What happened with the smart grid this week? From Smartgrid-CI

The March acquisition madness goes into April, http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/schneider-electric-buys-another-one-smartlink-newtork-systems/ and VC’s still in love with Greentech.

For us, the utility of the week is Opower that will supply customer engagement solutions to BGE http://www.pr-inside.com/opower-selected-by-baltimore-gas-and-r2524827.htm

Opwer also attracted attention with quite interesting story about its IT. http://gigaom.com/2011/../opower

Isn’t it the time to talk big numbers on the smart grid ? EPRI did their math and the smart grid is without any about a smart (long term) investment. http://my.epri.com/portal/../epri_analysis_estimates_costs_benefits_of_fully_developing_smart_grid_da_777189.html

The Canadians did their math and they will need $293B over the next 20 years to upgrade their grid

The Saudi did their math too and they are ready to invest $100B in the next decade to secure their energy future with nuclear and solar power.

The Brits did their math and they (at least National Grid) are ready to invest 50B (about $75B) to upgrade their grid. http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/../Nor-Wal+04.04.11.htm

The most discreet move on the American market is SourceOne’s partnership with the town of Hampstead, NY to implement an energy efficiency program. http://www.businesswire.com/news/../SourceOne-Partners-Largest-Town-United-States-Key

Who is SourceOne? It is the energy efficiency business of Veolia. Who is Veolia? The number 1 water utility in the world; a $50B company with 300 000 employees.  No doubt we will hear about them again.

Another noticeable strategic move is Google going solar in Germany. http://gigaom.com/cleantech/google-backs-german-solar-farm/

This is the second time for them. Google is already one of the top investors in an offshore wind farm project in Maryland.

These stories are some of the 296 stories published in Smargrid-CI this week.

We hope you will enjoy the reading and wish you a very good week end.
